Your baby's first rhythms are already beginning
The earliest days are about settling in together
In the first week, your baby's world is still adjusting to life outside the womb. Sleep, feeding, and closeness are doing most of the work right now, even when nothing about the day feels structured.
What is happening
Your baby is learning that the world outside is warmer in some places, cooler in others, and full of new sounds. Their nervous system is still settling. Most of their energy is going into feeding, growing, and feeling safe in your arms.
Is this normal
Yes. There is no schedule to follow this early. Days and nights blur together, feeds come close together, and sleep arrives in short stretches. None of this means anything is going wrong. It is exactly how the first week is meant to feel.
What you may notice
- Long stretches of sleep followed by sudden alertness
- Feeds that feel constant
- A baby who settles best when held close
- Small startles, squeaks, and noises during sleep
What helps right now
- Keeping your baby close, skin to skin when you can
- Feeding on cue rather than by the clock
- Letting the day stay quiet and low key
- Accepting offers of help so you can rest
What to expect next
Over the coming weeks, tiny patterns will start to appear. You may begin to recognise a particular cry, a familiar pre feed wriggle, or a calmer time of day. Nothing is fixed yet, and it does not need to be. For now, simply being together is doing the work. The rhythm you will know later is already quietly beginning.
