Movement starts before rolling appears
Small shifts in posture and effort often happen before big milestones
Around week nineteen, you may notice your baby shifting their weight, kicking with more strength, or arching to one side. These small movements often appear well before rolling itself.
What is happening
Your baby's muscles and coordination are getting ready for bigger movements. Each little push, twist and stretch is a small piece of practice. What looks like wriggling is actually the body learning how to organise itself.
Is this normal
Yes. Some babies practise quietly for weeks before rolling, others seem to skip straight to the bigger movement. Both paths are normal. Early effort that does not yet lead anywhere is still real progress.
What you may notice
- More kicking and arching during play
- Rolling onto one side and back again
- Lifting the head higher during tummy time
- Pushing with the feet when held upright
What helps right now
- Plenty of floor time on a safe, firm surface
- Short, regular tummy time sessions
- Keeping the changing mat a safe place with a hand nearby
- Letting your baby move freely without too many props
What to expect next
Over the coming weeks, these small movements often build into the first full roll. It can happen during play, during a nappy change, or quietly in the cot. Once it appears, it usually takes a little while to become reliable in both directions.
