Separation awareness may begin appearing
Noticing when caregivers move away
Around week thirty-two, your baby may start noticing when you leave the room. A small protest, a quick look around or a reach toward you can all be early signs of separation awareness.
What is happening
Your baby is beginning to understand that people exist even when they cannot see them. This is part of object permanence. Knowing you are still somewhere, but not here, is a big idea for a small brain.
Is this normal
Yes. Separation awareness is a healthy sign of attachment, not dependence. Some babies show it clearly and early, others not until later. Both patterns are normal.
What you may notice
- Looking up when you leave the room
- Reaching out as you walk away
- Settling quickly once you return
- More comfort-seeking during transitions
What helps right now
- Telling your baby when you are leaving and returning
- Keeping goodbyes short and warm
- Playing simple peekaboo games
- Letting familiar carers hold them often
What to expect next
Over the coming weeks, separation feelings can grow stronger before they ease. Knowing that you always come back is built up slowly through many small goodbyes and reunions.
