Communication becomes more expressive
Gestures, sounds and reactions feel clearer
Around week fifty, your baby's communication is becoming more expressive. Gestures, sounds and faces all carry more meaning than they did even a few weeks ago.
What is happening
Your baby is putting many small skills together. Eye contact, gesture, sound and timing now work as a team. Even without words, they can let you know a lot about how they feel and what they want.
Is this normal
Yes. Some babies are loud and animated, others quieter and more subtle. Both are normal. Expressive does not always mean noisy, sometimes it is a single look that says it all.
What you may notice
- Bigger reactions to favourite people and toys
- Clearer signs of yes and no through body and face
- Using gestures and sounds together
- Sharing little moments of pride or surprise
What helps right now
- Responding to all forms of communication
- Putting words to what they seem to be feeling
- Slowing down to notice small signals
- Keeping conversation going through the day
What to expect next
Over the coming weeks, communication will keep widening. First words can appear in their own time, and many babies still rely heavily on gestures and sounds well after they begin to speak.
