The Active Exploration Phase
Months 6 to 8 — solids, sitting, scooting. Everything is changing at once.
Buckle up — this one's busy
Solids start. Sitting clicks. Some babies start crawling, scooting, or rolling across the room with purpose. Your home will need a quick reassessment of what counts as "out of reach."
This phase is a big one. Loads of growth, loads of milestones, loads of mess. You're going to love it (mostly).
What's happening for your baby
Your baby is exploring with their whole body and increasingly with their hands and mouth. Solids open up a whole new world of taste and texture. Movement opens up the room.
Common shifts:
- Starting solids alongside milk feeds
- Sitting independently
- Crawling, commando-ing, or pre-crawling
- Stronger likes and dislikes (loud opinions appear)
- Naps consolidating, often into a clearer 2-nap pattern
- Possible sleep disruption from new skills
Solids: a quick word
Don't panic about how much your baby is eating in the first few months of solids. Milk is still the main event. Solids are about practice, exposure, and joy — not calories. Mess is the goal, not a sign you're doing it wrong.
How Millies App helps
Tracking solids alongside milk feeds and naps gives you a much fuller picture of your baby's day. The app helps you see how feeds and solids are balancing, when night sleep is being affected by a new skill, and how naps are reshaping themselves around a more active little person.
A gentle reminder
If your baby is suddenly waking more at night, it's very often a brain that's practising a new skill in their sleep. Annoying — but a sign of progress, not a problem.
